Politics and International Relations BA Honours student Josh Dean has been nominated as the Labour candidate for the race for MP in Bishop Stortford.
Josh Dean is the party’s Hertford and Stortford constituency candidate for the next General Election. He will face Liberal Democrat Helen Campbell, Nick Cox of the Green party and John Burmicz of the Reform UK party to unseat the current MP Julie Marson of the Conservative Party.
Josh Dean was elected to Hertford Town Council in May 2023. In 2021, he ran as a Labour candidate for the Hertford St Andrews division in the Hertfordshire County Council elections and came within 170 votes of winning.
His platform is focused on tackling the cost-of-living crisis, supporting the NHS and social care, taking action on the climate crisis, ensuring safer streets for his community and increasing opportunities for residents.
Josh Dean said: “It’s the honour of my life to be selected as Labour’s candidate in the community where I grew up and where I call home. I grew up in Hertford and Stortford, worked in our community and attended local schools, and I’m proud to represent Castle ward on Hertford Town Council. I took several years out to work, first in Hertford and Stortford and then commuting into London, before joining the University of Westminster to get my degree. Young people do have a place in politics, and it has been great to meet so many other students passionate about political change. I’m proud to be a young person standing at the next General Election.”
Josh Dean’s campaign contributes toward the Decent Work and Economic Growth (8), Climate Action (13) and Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions (16) development goals of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were adopted by the University of Westminster to help make the University a more sustainable, responsible and inclusive place to live, work and study.
