Westminster Music students showcase talent on London tour

The University of Westminster, in collaboration with new music promoter GoToBeat, have taken part in the On The Radar tour. Taking place across four nights and four venues in London from 29 October to 1 November, the vibrant and multi-genre music tour spotlighted the University’s most promising emerging artists and musicians.

The tour took place across London and featured a wide range of genres including hip-hop, rock, electronic, indie, gospel, alternative and folk. Each night offered a unique experience, reflecting the breadth of talent developed on Westminster’s Music Production, Performance and Business BA Honours, Music Business Management MA and Audio Production MA courses.

The On The Radar tour showcased not only musical talent but also the diverse array of cultural backgrounds and influences that are present within the University of Westminster student body. Along with performing, students and alumni also had the chance to take on behind-the-scenes roles, including live music production, marketing, promotion and social media.

The tour was organised as part of the University’s Playlist Westminster project. The initiative aims to support artist development by enhancing the skills and employability of University of Westminster students and take them further on their artistic journey.

Julia Toppin, Playlist Director and Senior Lecturer, said: “I’m delighted with the tour, four dates, four grass roots music venues, over 20 artists from the Music Performance, Production and Business BA Honours and the Music Business Management MA, with all promotion, graphic design and live music production roles held by a team of over 20 students. It was wonderful to see students working together as a community and also to see them perform. It was also great to have nothing to do on the four nights but watch the student work independent of any instruction.

“Each student now has the invaluable experience of working on a tour, enhancing their employability in the music industries and two artists also benefitted from playing an international tour date in Kristiansand, Norway, as part of the KRS Open conference in the University of Agder.”

Sam Virgo, who goes by the name Svirgo19, graduated from Westminster’s Music Performance, Production and Business BA Honours course this summer and performed on the tour. About the experience he said: “Being a part of the tour was an absolutely amazing experience and I feel very blessed to have this opportunity. I had the chance to meet loads of new people and perform new music to lots of new faces with my band.”

This tour directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth and 10: Reduced Inequalities. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
