The University of Westminster has initiated a new international partnership with Covenant University in Nigeria by hosting a writing workshop for students.
Covenant University is a private Pentecostal Christian University, which has been operating with official status since 2002 in Ota, Nigeria. It is one of the leading universities in Africa founded on a Christian mission ethos.
The workshop was a collaboration between Westminster Business School and the College of Management and Social Sciences at Covenant University with the aim of helping early career researchers and PhD students who are very close to submitting their thesis to increase their chances of getting published in high-ranking journals.
By the end of the session, participants learned about what editors in high-ranking journals look for to increase publication success, choosing the right journal for your article, choosing the right title for your article, how to write a good introduction and tips for clarifying your message so that it aligns with your target journal.
This workshop is the beginning of an international partnership between the University of Westminster and Covenant University and aims over time to improve writing skills of young researchers for publication, provide knowledge on getting published in higher ranked journals and create opportunities for collaborative research and networking.
This joint online writing workshop, which was hosted on 24 November, came about through an initiative to open up a dialogue to explore areas of international partnership. It is hoped that this will lead to the development of a memorandum of understanding between University of Westminster and Covenant University.
Speaking about the collaboration Dr Irene Brew-Riverson, Senior Lecturer in Westminster’s School of Organisations, Economy and Society, said: “We are very pleased to initiate this partnership with Covenant University in Nigeria. The workshop was a great success for everyone involved and we hope it will lead to further collaboration in the future.”
Prof Evans Osabuohien, Professor in Economics at the College of Management and Social Sciences at Covenant University added: “It was a wonderful session particularly with the level of engagement and enthusiasm from participants.”
The participants also left feedback about the event highlighting the importance of ‘the practical experiences shared and the insight into the minds of editors’ and ‘the positive impact of the workshop, most especially the encouragement to keep writing despite rejection of manuscript’.
