The University’s Alumni and Development Teams have published the sixth edition of Impact magazine, to celebrate their generous donors and volunteers, and showcase what Westminster students can achieve, thanks to their support.
Through a range of case studies and interviews, the publication highlights the ‘impact’ which the support from the Westminster donors and volunteers has on student experience at the University, as well as students’ future prospects as Westminster graduates.
In this year’s magazine, Alumni and Development Teams spotlight the new partnership between Westminster and Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). SIE are providing scholarships to Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Computer Science and Engineering students from disadvantaged backgrounds, ultimately contributing to greater diversity within the gaming, tech and entertainment industries. We hear from some of the recipients of this Level-Playing Field scholarship, Favour and Abdul, about what a difference the funding has made to their studies and ambitions for the future.
The magazine includes an article on the latest success with Future Ready Mentoring at Westminster: Group Mentoring sessions. As the demand for mentoring at Westminster continues to grow, the Mentoring Team have looked for innovative solutions to allow more students to benefit from a mentoring relationship. This year, they successfully launched course-embedded Group Mentoring sessions. As part of time-tabled teaching, alumni and non-alumni volunteers have inspired hundreds more students with mentoring.
The Alumni team interviewed alumnus and Westminster Working Cultures (WWC) Professional volunteer, Edmilson Angelo (Politics and International Relations BA, 2016). Edmilson shared some of the tips he offered to students about readjusting to life back in Africa after they graduated, as part of the WWC Professional event. Edmilson, who is originally from Angola, founded the charity Change 1’s Life while studying at Westminster and is keen to inspire students and show them what they can achieve.
The magazine also features an update on the most recent progress with the redevelopment of 29 Marylebone Road. Subject to planning permission, over the next two years, this building will be transformed into a hub for learning and engagement, and we are looking forward to welcoming local alumni and businesses to connect with Westminster students.
Speaking about the publication, Jordan Scammell, Head of Development and Fundraising at Westminster, said: “We’re proud to share another great edition of our annual supporter magazine, bursting with stories of impact told through the words of our students. Westminster prides itself on helping all students reach their potential regardless of their background. Our supporters play an essential role in helping us to achieve this, as these articles demonstrate. Thanks to everyone for your support.”
Alyssa Martin, Head of Alumni Relations (Maternity Cover), added: “It is a pleasure to publish this magazine and showcase the incredible difference our volunteers and partners make to Westminster students’ experience. We are so grateful to all our alumni and non-alumni supporters for their time, dedication and continued support.”
