On 6 July Dr Peter Bonfield, Vice-Chancellor and President of the University of Westminster, hosted a reception to mark the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the University’s partnership with Westminster International University in Tashkent (WIUT).
Over the past 20 years WIUT has grown from a first cohort of 120 students to a population of over 5000 students studying University of Westminster degrees at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate level in Tashkent, Uzbekistan. Degree subject areas include Business, Economics, Finance, Computing and Law, along with specialist Masters in areas such as Public Health, Learning and Teaching, and Research Training.
As part of the celebrations Westminster was delighted to welcome a delegation from WIUT led by WIUT’s Rector Bakhrom Mirkasimov. The group included Dr Abdumalik Djumanov who served as the second Rector of WIUT. The University also welcomed back a number of colleagues who had been involved in the establishment of WIUT. These included Professor Geoffrey Copland, Westminster Vice-Chancellor at the time, and Alan France, who served as First Deputy Rector until 2020.
Commenting on the event Professor Alexandra Hughes, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Global Engagement and Employability at Westminster, said: “WIUT is our oldest and most important international strategic partner. We have achieved so much together in the past 20 years, and we very much look forward to building further on the partnership in the next twenty years and beyond.”
