Co-organised by Westminster Business School, the Westminster Development Policy Network and Accra Business School in Ghana, the online webinar explored how the demands on public sector leaders have changed substantially in recent years, and how they might change even further in the next ten years.

The panel, formed of leaders working across Africa and Europe, discussed how we can better understand the capabilities that today’s public sector leaders and future leaders should be developing. The panel consisted of Kweku Bedu-Addo, Chief Executive Officer for Standard Chartered Bank (South Africa) who previously worked in public policy; Professor Elvis Cornerstone, Vice-President of Accra Business School and Chair of Economics at the Institute of Economics and Finance in Ghana; and Professor Malcolm Kirkup, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of College of Westminster Business School.

Throughout the event, key topics around public sector leadership were discussed by the panellists, including digital inequality, smart working and remote leadership. The event was closed with a dedicated Q&A session where a variety of subjects including austerity and building trust in public sector organisations were discussed.

Talking about the event, Dr Karen Jackson, Senior Lecturer in Economics and Assistant Head of School at the School of Organisations, Economy and Society, said: “This was a wonderful opportunity to hear first-hand about the challenges faced by public sector leaders. Unsurprisingly, it was one of our best attended virtual events of the year.”
