The event was hosted at the residence of Westminster alumnus Shane Jocelyn in South Kensington, London. The participants were supporters of the University from a group of alumni, corporate organisations and senior academics.

Combining the words ‘financial’ and ‘technology’, fintech is technology-enabled financial innovation, which is changing the way financial institutions provide financial services. Last year the University launched it’s MSc in FinTech and there are ambitions to develop an undergraduate offer too.

This occasion was designed to bring leading finance and technology professionals together for an informal evening of networking and discussion, where news of recent University of Westminster developments in the field and elsewhere were shared.

Malcolm Kirkup, Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of College, Westminster Business School, and Professor Harry Thapar, Head of the School of Finance and Accounting, both presented the University’s latest work related to fintech and its shared vision for the future.

Malcolm Kirkup said: “The event focused on exploring new opportunities arising in FinTech for our students and alumni. FinTech as a sector is growing exponentially, with new companies emerging to address the possibilities arising from technologies such as blockchain, AI, machine learning and cryptocurrencies. It was fabulous to meet senior directors who are working in this space, and who will be working to support our new FinTech and other related programmes going forward. Even more importantly, some of those attending were alumni and it was very gratifying to see the success they are achieving in this exciting new sector."

Speaking about the event, Shane Jocelyn, CFA, said: “It’s truly inspiring to see the extent of the University’s efforts to build the next generation of financial practitioners. It is a real pleasure to host a medium to channel the communication regarding these important initiatives - ones which all alumni can admire and support.”
