Architecture students Thomas Rowntree and Alex Gavra have both been named winners of the RIBA London Student Awards 2022 for the West London area.
The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) is a global professional membership body that aims to drive for excellence in the architectural field, with RIBA London representing some of the best creative talent in the capital.
The RIBA London Student Awards aim to promote excellence and reward talent in the study and education of architecture. Entry is open to those studying architecture at ten universities and colleges in London and is judged by course leaders and tutors.
Alex Gavra’s project is titled The Bridge and is concerned with the 24-hour city and the impact that the pandemic has had on London’s night-time economy.
Thomas Rowntree’s winning project is titled Sets in Motion and explores vision through framing and the picturesque nature of the Alexandra Palace Park landscape. A body of research in cinema inspired Thomas to propose an independent filmmaker facility where the architecture and landscape becomes a backdrop for the content.
The proposal utilises the level change of the park by being integrated into the slope and maintains views over the panorama. Key to the design is the celebration of the community of the park and the provision of a facility that is fully accessible from all areas of the landscape.
Speaking about how it feels to have a RIBA London Student Award, Thomas said: “It was a surreal but extremely proud moment to receive the RIBA award. To have students work celebrated and recognised is truly appreciated by students across the course.”
