University of Westminster Transport Planning and Management alumnus David Astill has received the Bus Centre of Excellence Lifetime Achievement Award.
David Astill, the Managing Director of Nottingham City transport and Westminster alumnus, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Bus Centre of Excellence (BCoE) for his services to the bus industry at the Quality Bus Conference in Manchester. The Lifetime Achievement Award recognises exceptional contribution to the bus sector in England over a number of years.
Following a childhood interest in buses, David began his career in the industry immediately after graduating in Transport Planning and Management from the University of Westminster in the 1980s. At Westminster, Astill was mentored by Professor Peter White, now an Emeritus Professor at the University, who was also in attendance at the conference.
Reflecting on the award ceremony and his experience at Westminster, Astill said: “I was particularly pleased that present at the awards ceremony was Prof. Peter White, my tutor and mentor from my time as a post-graduate student at University of Westminster in the late 1980s. I have kept in contact with Peter throughout my career via several bus industry events we both regularly attend, and I thought it was most fitting to be able to share my delight at winning this award with him. I was also delighted when I was invited to speak two years ago at a special event at the Marylebone Campus to celebrate 50 years of the Transport Studies Group.”
David’s work in the bus industry contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure and 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
