Dr Gustavo Espinoza Ramos, Lecturer in Marketing and Management at the Westminster Business School, recently presented at the Advanced Higher Education’s Sustainability Symposium 2022 to discuss contemporary initiatives in sustainable education with university staff and students.
Advanced Higher Education is a sector-owned charity that works with institutions across the world to address systemic inequalities to meet the evolving needs of students and society. They deliver their support through a range of development programmes, including: events, fellowships and awards.
Their Sustainability Symposium is a presenter-led virtual event which discusses and shares the latest practices and initiatives in sustainable education. The two-day event titled ‘Front, Centre and Now: Sustainability as a Core Purpose of Higher Education’ provided students, staff and other colleagues with the opportunity to share their innovation, research, and other activity about sustainability and climate change among a network of peers.
Dr Espinoza Ramos’s presentation covered how embedded Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) is in a core module at the Westminster Business School. There was also special interest on how PBL was a suitable student-centred pedagogy to embed ESD in the Business School.
Commenting on his presentation, Dr Espinoza Ramos said: “It went really well. My presentation provided a concrete example on how a pedagogical framework can be applied in relation to ESD. By arranging field trips and giving the students options during learning activities and assessments, this will help empower them in their learning.”
