The University’s What Comes Next panel series concluded for the semester with an event welcoming recent graduates from various Business and Management courses who shared their insights into what you can do with your degree once you have graduated on 28 November 2022
The event was co-organised by Westminster's Alumni Relations Team, Evgeniya Macleod, Course Leader in Business Management and Dr Setenay Dilek Fidler, Lecturer in Management and Leadership, and took place at Westminster’s Marylebone Campus.
The alumni panel included Peggy Elechi, graduate of the Business Management BA Honours course and Recruitment Consultant at Annapurna Recruitment and Aram Tufan, also a Business Management BA Honours graduate and Founder of Happy Student. They were joined by Dawn McWhinney, Human Resources Officer at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, Lauren Gillies, Account Manager at Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness, and Adeola Omole, Confectionary Artist at Dee's Basement, who all graduated from the Business Management Entrepreneurship BA course.
During the event, the Westminster alumni talked about their career journeys to date. This included milestones from finding their first jobs after graduation to founding their own businesses and the uncertainty end excitement that came through both paths. The speakers also shared some of their regrets, and how they have been able to draw valuable lessons from these. They also discussed how students can find their own passion and move from being a Business Management student into highly skilled employment. This was followed by a Q&A and a social where students were able to approach the speakers with their questions.
Talking about the event, Peggy Elechi said: “It was really refreshing to be transparent and honest with the students, especially regarding salary, as no matter how much we try to avoid the topic, it is very important. I could also see that the students were very receptive to the information and engaged in the discussion. I was also very impressed with the questions they asked - they did not shy away from being inquisitive, which is very inspiring to see. Very well done, and thank you to Alex Varga, Alumni Relations Assistant, and her team for organising something like this. It was great to revisit Westminster and see the different initiatives they are running to assist and inspire students.”
A student attendee added: “I think it was very useful to hear from recent graduates working in different careers but with the same degree and [I think] it will really help me find my happy career.”
What Comes Next aims to share the knowledge and experience of recent graduates to help undergraduate students better understand the variety of opportunities and career fields after graduation.
