On 10 November, 85 International Business BA Honours students visited the Financial Times (FT) headquarters, where they attended a talk by acclaimed investigative journalist Dan McCrum and learnt about the inner workings of a fast-paced financial publication.
During the visit, students had the opportunity to learn how a leading financial publication operates, find out how to optimise the FT app and explore lesser-known tools that are crucial for research, inspiring their future careers.
Members of the FT’s Editorial Early Careers and Development Team and Diversity and Inclusion Team spoke to students about the diverse roles available within the organisation and the essential skills they would need to work within the fast-paced environment. Not only were they given a glimpse into the inner workings of the company, they were also offered valuable networking and employability opportunities.
They also listened to a talk by Dan McCrum, an investigative journalist at the FT known for his book, Money Men, his work on the Wirecard scandal, and the subsequent Netflix documentary Bringing Down Wirecard. The scandal saw the payment processor and financial services company Wirecard use corrupt business practices and fraudulent activity to manipulate their financial records.
The students were accompanied by Dr Thanos Fragkandreas, Lecturer in Entrepreneurship, Sylvia Snijders, Senior Lecturer in Organisational Behaviour, and Darrell Kofkin, Senior Lecturer in Social Entrepreneurship. The visit was made possible thanks to Liv Brown and Seval Dogan from the FT.
Georgia Griffiths, first year International Business BA Honours student, said: “I would like to say a massive thank you to the Financial Times who took the time to provide a marvellous experience for the International Business students of the University of Westminster.”
Another student from the course, Lara Browne, added: "During the panel discussion, we were taught how to optimise the Financial Times app and uncover lesser-known tools crucial for research. .Thank you to all the panellists for generously sharing their time, having an open conversation and providing us with learnings about the Financial Times.”
