The University of Westminster has signed the newly published London Higher Sustainability Pledge. The Pledge represents 20 member institutions which have committed to building upon the sustainability work across London Higher Education (HE) to reduce the environmental impact of HE Institutions, and to address the challenges of the climate emergency.

London Higher is a membership organisation for universities and HE colleges across the capital. It is the largest representative body of its kind in England, representing the diversity of multi-faculty universities, small, specialist conservatoires and research institutes. The organisation acts as a collective voice for the member institutions, hosting collaborative networks, promoting London as a world-class study and research destination, and responding to policy concerns.

The Pledge requests institutions to commit to the following six points:

  1. Joining the London Higher Sustainability Network
  2. Providing data for a series of shared impact measurements
  3. Sharing Sustainability Strategy and associated policies with London Higher
  4. Regular meetings between the Sustainability Team and senior leaders
  5. Participating wherever possible in collaborative initiatives and activities through the network
  6. Committing to pan-London initiatives to tackle climate change through the Greater London Authority

Talking about the Pledge, Morgan Lirette, Sustainable Development Advisor from the University of Westminster said: “London HEIs are anchors in local communities, sources of trusted research and educators of tomorrow’s thought leaders. It’s for this reason that they can and should lead the way to a healthier and more equitable planet. We are delighted to have entered this formal commitment with our peers across London Higher and look forward to continuing our behind-the-scenes work and collaboration with London Higher, as well as current and future co-signatories.”

Shirley Rodrigues, Deputy Mayor for Environment and Energy, London said: “It’s exciting news that some of the capital’s biggest organisations have now pledged to work together to support London’s ambitious net-zero targets. Now is the time to deliver on the estate decarbonisation efforts that will save on bills, decarbonise our capital and ensure a trained workforce in green construction.”
