The Pathologist provides space for professionals in disease diagnostics to discuss their work, whilst dealing with the always changing medicine and medical education.

Dr Gaze was inspired to become a pathologist at the age of 14, and completed his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in West Yorkshire followed by a PhD in Clinical Biochemistry in London. He is currently Lecturer in Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Westminster.

He authored and co-authored more than 150 peer-reviewed papers and over 200 abstracts, and he is a peer-reviewer of 25 medical journals. He contributed to six book chapters on Cardiovascular disease and biomarkers, while writing a textbook on cardiac troponin. He also took part in over 50 internationally invited conferences.

Regarding his recognition on The Power List 2022, Dr Gaze said: “It is a great personal honour to be nominated and recognised professionally by inclusion on the Pathology Power List 2022. Having spent the early part of my career in NHS Pathology diagnostics, I felt a move to academia would be vital to give something back in the way of teaching. That combined with my research and involvement in the profession has been formally recognised. I hope this serves as inspiration to our students following in my footsteps.”

Dr Gaze is a member of the Royal Society of Medicine of London; The Association for Clinical Biochemistry and Laboratory Medicine; The American Association of Clinical Chemistry; Institute of Biomedical Sciences; Institute of Biology; European Society of Pathology; The Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland, and associate member of the Royal Institution of London. He is also the Co-editor in Chief of the journal Practical Laboratory Medicine.

He and his colleagues have won a number of awards including two distinguished Abstract awards from the National Academy of Clinical Biochemistry as well as a Diploma for Oral Presentation, presented at the 17th IFCC-FESCC European Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine and the 60th National Congress of the Netherlands Society of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine in Amsterdam in 2007.

As an educator at Westminster, he is passionate about developing career opportunities for students through work-based learning, placements and internships. He advises his students to keep their options open and explore different contexts as there are a number of jobs in science that require a wider understanding of the industry.
