Westminster is marking Transgender Awareness Week taking place between 13 November and 19 November this year, which is a week when transgender people and allies take action to bring attention to their community.
The week is an opportunity to advance advocacy around issues of discrimination, prejudice, and violence that affect the transgender community.
Speaking about why the week is important, Pippa Catterall, Professor of History and Policy and Co-chair of the Q+ colleague Network, said: “Most people in the UK claim never to have met anyone who is trans or non-binary. Public lack of awareness of the lives, experiences, and histories of this long-marginalised group remains widespread. With increasing numbers of students identifying as trans or non-binary, both at Westminster and elsewhere, Transgender Awareness Week seeks to promote understanding in place of fear or prejudice.”
Transgender Awareness Week ends with Transgender Day of Remembrance (TDOR) on Sunday 20 November 2022, which commemorates the lives lost to anti-transgender violence.
