Students and staff from the University of Westminster Legal Advice Clinic took part in the London Legal Walk to raise money to support frontline free legal advice agencies on 13 June 2023. The fundraising walk was organised by the London Legal Support Trust (LLST), with participants completing a route of 10km.
The London Legal Walk brings together over 10,000 walkers every year to raise funds for frontline free legal advice services. Members of the judiciary, barristers, students, advice agencies, and solicitors walk together to fund over 100 specialist free legal advice agencies. The agencies provide great support in reducing debt, poverty, and homelessness, as well as combating discrimination and injustice. LLST also works with the agencies to help them become more sustainable, cut costs and improve coordination and partnership working.
The Westminster team of walkers was led by Anna Steiner, Senior Lecturer at Westminster Law School, and included Westminster Law students Shriya Gupta, Khushi Sharma, Giulia Uddin Mollah, Karen Doyle, Opeyemi Yusuf, Samuel, Sara Tenn, and Anna Pisliariuk. Jochim Dymott, Principal Lecturer, also did the walk on the day in Brighton.
Talking about the fundraising event, Anna Steiner said: “This was a wonderful opportunity to participate in an important and enjoyable event. We have raised £435 so far to support free legal advice and access to justice and it would be fantastic if we could reach £500. The team were a joy to walk with and put in a sterling effort on one of the hottest days of the year! It is not too late to donate.”
With over 13.4 million people living in poverty in the UK, from which many are unable to afford legal help, the University of Westminster Legal Advice Clinic based in central London, believes in access to justice and provides free legal advice to individuals in the areas of housing, family, employment and immigration law and are part of the Windrush Justice Clinic.
