The panel event What It Takes to Cope with Loneliness took place at Portland Hall on 23 February 2023 with a panel of alumni sharing their personal and professional experiences of coping during times of loneliness and discussed practical tips and advice on how to manage and overcome it.
The panel included alumna Jessica Agudelo, Founder of The Power of Us/Mental Health Trainer and Consultant, who graduated from the Health Psychology MSc course, and former University of Westminster staff member Kate Shurety, who has 20 years’ experience as a senior leader in the public and charity sectors, including leading the Campaign to End Loneliness through the pandemic. The event was chaired by Haydn Worley, Senior Alumni Officer at the University of Westminster.
During the event the panel discussed how to identify and understand the feeling of loneliness and how life transitions can lead to people feeling lonely, and what we can do as individuals and communities to support. This was then followed by a Q&A session.
Around 40 students and recent graduates attended the event, with one participant saying the panel “delivered the talk with empathy and connected well with audience”. Another added this event was “very articulate and treated the topic delicately but with great insight”.
James Huke, Alumni Officer at the University of Westminster, said: “I would like to say a huge thank you to the panel for taking part in this event. It was an inspiring and honest discussion about a very important topic with lots of great advice.”
The What it Takes event series features exciting and innovative alumni speakers sharing their experience and advice on a range of topics, including employability, personal and professional development. For the 2022-23 academic year, a series of in-person and online events have been organised.
