The University of Westminster is partnering with the West London Green Skills Hub, part of the Mayor of London’s Academies Programme, which aims to support Londoners hardest hit by the pandemic to enter work in the Green Skills sector.
To mark the launch of the partnership, an event took place on 8 March 2022 at the Brent Civic Centre in Wembley, to coincide with International Women’s Day. It brought together women with local training providers in the form of a green skills job fair.
The University of Westminster is one of five Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) partnering with the West London Green Skills Hub. The aim is to provide opportunities for progression from relevant programmes in Further Education to some of Westminster’s courses in subject areas such as construction and architecture.
The West London Green Skills Hub is part of the Mayor’s Academies Programme, which aims to support Londoners hardest hit by the pandemic to enter good work in sectors key to London’s recovery from the pandemic and long-term economic growth, as part of the London Recovery Programme.
It will do this by coordinating and quality-marking training in London, including adult education. It will also provide bespoke support to help newly skilled people into work in sectors crucial to London’s recovery including hospitality, creative, digital, green, health and social care.
Speaking about the launch, Linda Clarke, Professor of European Industrial Relations at the Westminster Business School and Director of the Centre for the Study of the Production of the Built Environment (ProBE), said: “It is becoming increasingly important for Further and Higher Education to collaborate in providing vocational education and training relating to climate change, sustainability, and the green transition, to allow students to progress and for courses to be in tune with each other.”
She continued: “There are tremendous employment opportunities opening up across West London in areas key to addressing the climate emergency, including construction, retrofitting, transport and waste management, so that the newly-announced partnership of the University of Westminster together with a range of other stakeholders, in the West London Green Skills Hub of the Mayor’s Academy Programme, promises to be an exciting and valuable initiative for all concerned.”
