SIE has partnered with the University of Westminster since 2021, in a four-year commitment, to provide life-changing scholarships to students from diverse and underrepresented backgrounds, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of higher education. To date, SIE has donated half a million pounds and supported 16 students, demonstrating their unwavering commitment to fostering academic excellence.

By alleviating financial barriers, the scholarship allows talented individuals to focus on their studies without the burden of financial constraints. The partnership also fosters a culture of innovation and inclusivity, addressing the lack of diversity in key disciplines and opening doors for students who may have otherwise struggled to access higher education.

Reem Abutalib is studying on Westminster’s Software Engineering (Conversion) MSc course and has already felt the benefits of the scholarship. She said: “Already, the bursary has alleviated significant financial pressures, allowing me to dedicate more time to my Software Engineering degree and build my portfolio to assist in my future endeavours. It’s empowering to know that I have the resources to access better tools, attend industry events and take on opportunities that were previously out of reach. Looking ahead, the funds will continue to support my academic journey and provide a strong foundation as I prepare for a career in technology and gaming.”

Over the next year she plans to focus on excelling in her studies, undertake meaningful projects that align with her passion for the industry and build skills that will prepare her for a gaming or technology industry role. After graduation she aspires to work on projects that amplify underrepresented voices in gaming whilst building her career.

She added: “When I received the news that I had been awarded the SIE scholarship, I was overwhelmed with gratitude and excitement. It felt like a monumental step toward achieving my dreams and breaking barriers in an industry I’m passionate about. As a Sudanese Black woman, this recognition reaffirmed the value of my hard work and aspirations, and it gave me a sense of belonging in a space where diversity and inclusivity are often lacking.”

The second recipient is Semir Idris, a Cyber Security and Forensics MSc student. As a parent, the support received from the University and SIE offered a real boost.

He said: “Being a parent of four children has caused great financial pressure. Arriving at a pivotal point, the grant relieved my immediate financial obligations and gave my family and academic path fresh optimism.”

He added: “The scholarship's money has had quite an effect. They gave my family great relief and stability when I paid overdue tuition, obtained a deposit and rented a house. These gifts have helped me fulfil my academic goals and given my kids a safe and comfortable home. I cannot stress how much this has raised our standard of living and freed me to concentrate on my academics with a fresh will.”

Looking to the future, he plans to commit himself to the course and seek out a career in Cybersecurity after graduation. He hopes to create safe systems and support responsible technological usage, ensuring he makes a significant contribution to the field and guarantee a bright future for his family.

Jordan Scammell, Head of Development and Fundraising at the University of Westminster, said: “I am incredibly grateful for Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE)'s generous support and the profound impact it continues to have four years on since the programme launched. It’s great to meet our two new postgraduate scholars and hear how much this support means to them and their ambitions for the year ahead. I’m excited to see them thrive with the resources and opportunities provided. Although they represent the final scholars under the current scholarship, I am confident the impact of the programme on our scholars will be felt for many years to come. Thanks for your generous support.”
