On Saturday 20 November and Saturday 4 December, sixty-five Westminster international students and recent graduates attended the virtual Westminster Working Cultures (WWC) Professional - Career Insights events in India and China and Singapore to learn about the professional landscape, career opportunities, and working life in the labour market of their home countries.
The events gave attendees a chance to learn from a range of successful Indian and Chinese alumni from the University of Westminster, who have established themselves professionally in India, China, and Singapore after their studies.
On Saturday 20 November, Law LLB Honours graduate and Associate at Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. Harshita Mishra, Directing MA graduate and Founding Partner at Aexor Entertainment LLP Rikhil Bahadur, and International Relations MA graduate and Digital Planner Buyer at Mediacom Palakh Dutta, shared their invaluable experience with our students and recent graduates from India.
Highlights from the speakers included tips on navigating each of their industries in the Indian world of work, and the importance of building a local network to access a wide range of opportunities in the Indian hidden job market. They also spoke about career options for Indian students wishing to live and work in the UK after graduation through the newly introduced graduate visa route.
On Saturday 4 December, the WWC Professional – Career Insights: China and Singapore event welcomed a panel of two speakers, including Television: Theory, Culture and Industry MA graduate and Production & Development Senior Manager at 60% productions Lola Jianjie Xia, and Public Relations MA graduate and Assistant Communications Manager at Estée Lauder Companies and CO-Founder of EASTNOMADS.CO Lynn Zhu.
Highlights included speakers attributing their success to the time they spent at the University of Westminster, and reminding participants of the importance of persevering when stepping into the labour markets of China and Singapore. The panellists also shared with participants an array of practical advice and insights on navigating the labour markets in the UK, China and Singapore with a Westminster degree, including ways for international students to leverage their global experiences in the UK job market.
Talking about the events, Professor Alex Hughes, Deputy Vice Chancellor for Employability and Global Engagement, said: “It’s wonderful to see our WWC programme expanding in new directions, through WWC Professional. We are hugely grateful to our alumni and other speakers who give so much to help our students and recent graduates prepare for the challenging world of work”.
WWC Professional is part of a wider programme of activity, including WWC International and WWC UK, designed to support the employability skills development and global outlook of Westminster students. This programme was made possible by the generous funding support from the Quintin Hogg Trust and was organised by the WWC team within the Alumni Relations Office. Upcoming WWC Professional events in 2022 will focus on the labour markets of Middle Eastern, European, and African countries.
