Professor Steve Barnett, Professor of Communications, was quoted in an article by The Guardian about what changes the government can make to the BBC.
The article discussed how the BBC operates under a royal charter, which is due to start a midterm review in early 2022 which will focus on governance and regulatory arrangements, which the government will set the terms of reference for.
However, in the article, Professor Barnett spoke about how the government may not have the power to institute governance procedures that would impact any programme-making or influence output at the BBC.
He said: “The government cannot make changes that affect individual programmes, micro-level governance, but they can change the powers they currently have, such as Ofcom could act without waiting for official complaints,”
