The article explores the reasons behind the downfall of Oxford Street, with many shops now being boarded up. It then goes on to express the illegitimacy of souvenir and candy stores, as well as what can be done to restore Oxford Street to its former glory.

Commenting on Oxford Street’s boarded up shops, Professor Bailey is quoted as saying: “Covid and lockdowns reduced international tourists who used to be big spenders... Now, more people are shopping in their local town centre or Westfield.”

He then continues: “I’d like to see the street used for more cultural activities and housing... Traffic is being constrained, so it could be an attractive place to live.”
