Marco Roscini, Professor of International Law at the University of Westminster, has been appointed as Swiss Chair of International Humanitarian Law (Swiss IHL Chair) at the Geneva Academy of International Humanitarian Law and Human Rights.
Professor Roscini was recently announced as the next Swiss IHL Chair at the Geneva Academy, where he will coordinate research on disruptive military technologies and the digitalisation of armed conflict, including a joint project carried out with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). This visiting position will be for three years. Professor Roscini is a leading expert in international law of armed conflict, the use of force in international law and international cyber security law, and has published widely in the field of International Security Law.
The Geneva Academy is an organisation that provides postgraduate education, conducts academic legal research and policy studies and organises a range of training courses and expert meetings. The Academy concentrates on branches of international law that relate to situations of armed conflict, protracted violence and the protection of human rights. The Academy was established in 2007 by the Faculty of Law at the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
Professor Roscini has a longstanding relationship with the Geneva Academy, where he has given a number of public lectures and was recently involved in a panel discussion about the international law aspects of the armed conflict in Ukraine.
Talking about his appointment, Professor Roscini said: “I am delighted to have been appointed as Swiss IHL Chair and in turn have been asked to lead the research project on disruptive military technologies at the Geneva Academy. This is indeed one of the most pressing issues in today’s international humanitarian law.”
