Professor Lewis Dartnell, Professor in Science Communication, has written an article for BBC Sky at Night Magazine about the possibility of lightning on other planets.
Written in the magazine’s ‘Cutting Edge’ section, where experts discuss new research, Professor Dartnell explores how lightning may occur on other planets through the global atmospheric electrical circuit (GEC), which is the course of continuous movement of atmospheric electricity between the ionosphere and the Earth.
Speaking about the research of Christiane Helling from the University of St Andrews, Professor Dartnell writes: “Many exoplanets are predicted to have layers in their atmospheres cool enough to condense cloud particles, which also presents the possibility of lightning storms.”
