Professor John Golding, Professor of Applied Psychology, was quoted in an article by HuffPost UK about why people are experiencing travel sickness more post-lockdown. He was also quoted in an article by The Telegraph on the same subject.
In the article, Professor Golding explained a theory that motion sickness occurs due to sensory conflict or mismatch. He explained that when we travel but focus on something like reading, a sensory mismatch occurs which can cause symptoms of nausea.
Talking about how people have been experiencing this nausea more since coming out of lockdown, he said: “It’s a bit like if you haven’t ridden a bike for a long time, although you don’t completely forget how to ride a bike, it takes you a few trips to get back into it.”
He added: After a few journeys, adaptation should come back quickly. Most people will get back to normal after a few trips.”
