Nutrition alumna Nazma Rahman elected as Mayor of Camden

Nazma has lived and worked in Camden for her whole life. Having completed both her Human Nutrition BSc Honours and her Postgraduate diploma in International Public Health Nutrition at Westminster, Nazma worked previously as a nutrition consultant for hospitals and health centres across Camden. Following years of dedicated voluntary and community work, Nazma served as a Labour Councillor for West Hampstead Ward for four years. Her election as Mayor of Camden sees her dedication to Camden’s residents extend even further, as she aims to use her time in office to champion underrepresented voices, inspire young people and address critical issues facing her local community. At her Mayoral induction, Nazma thanked her course leaders from the University of Westminster and announced her plans to prioritise the health and wellbeing of young people during her term.

During her mayoral term, Nazma plans to focus on young people and to raise awareness for the opportunities that exist across the Borough for them. She has chosen Young Camden Foundation as her mayoral charity and wants to work with them to support the excellent work they do helping young people and championing key issues in the community. Nazma also plans to highlight the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme and encourage young people to participate.

Speaking about Nazma’s success, Nazma’s Course Leader Dr Regina Keith, Senior Lecturer at the University of Westminster said: “Nazma has always been passionate about bringing the voices usually ignored to the table working with the local community to bring about change through inclusive action.

“As a mother and a woman, she has overcome significant challenges to ensure her passion for nutrition, health and the voice of young people and others in the community encourages others to act to reduce inequality.

“She is an inspiration to others bringing evidence and passion inaction with others to increase their power and their voice in decisions that affect their daily lives."
