Jewel John will be awarded a full scholarship for a place this year on the Music Business Management MA course. The Richard Antwi Scholarship is awarded in conjunction with the University of Westminster. This award supports future music industry leaders from underrepresented communities with the passion, drive and commitment to contribute to the music industry.
This year, through generous funding from Universal Music UK, Universal Publishing UK, Sony Music UK and Sony Music Publishing UK, the scholarship offers an additional London Living Wage Stipend to cover the higher current cost of living and studying in the city. This includes a bursary and stipend that totals £22,000, as well as mentorship and a work placement aligned with the scholar’s professional focus and aspirations.
The Music Business Management MA course acts as a bridge between academic study, research and the professional world of music business: preparing students to become the next generation of music industry leaders and entrepreneurs.
Jewel John is a co-founder of Soul & the City, a music events company that develops and showcases emerging talent. She said: "Receiving the Richard Antwi Scholarship is such an honour and blessing. The access to professional mentorship and the opportunity to build relationships along the way is an absolute game changer in the pursuit of my career. I am excited and looking forward to this journey at Westminster! I aspire to create opportunities for my community and young emerging artists. This will be a huge push in that direction."
The Richard Antwi Scholarship was created in 2016, following the sudden passing of hugely respected industry lawyer, manager and entrepreneur Richard Antwi, who had contributed to the Music Business Management MA course on numerous occasions as a guest lecturer.
Antwi’s passing caused an outpouring of goodwill from family, friends and many of the sector’s creators and shapers, who were close to him and experienced his support and counsel directly. The scholarship continues through the tireless dedication of a team of respected industry professionals who have shown an unwavering commitment to championing next-generation talent. The first scholar was awarded in 2018. 2023 marks the sixth scholarship awarded.
Reader in Knowledge Exchange Sally Anne Gross, who assists with the administration of the award for the University, said: “Jewel John really impressed the Richard Antwi Scholarship selection committee, and we are very excited to have her with us on the MA Music Business Management. She is already off to a great start, and I am very confident that she is going to find a place in industry at the end of her studies.”
"The UK music industry is in a very exciting place right now and there are a lot of good things going on. The MA Music Business Management has a fantastic network that our Richard Antwi Scholars are already contributing to on so many levels, which is something we should all be very proud of here at the University of Westminster.”
