The Global Economic Policy Group (GEPG) has resumed in-person meetings at the FernUniversität in Hagen Campus Berlin on June 27–28. While the size of the meeting was restricted due to continued COVID-19 restrictions, it was a lively academic discussion of macroeconomic policies, integration and trade over two-days.
The speakers included Professor Plutarchos Sakellaris from Athens University of Economics and Business who previously served at the Federal Reserve Board, European Central Bank, European Investment Bank and Hellenic Ministry of Economy and Finance. He shared the findings from a study of Greek firms investigating what drives the responses of young and small firms to financial crises. The event was also joined by Dr Christoph Görtz from the University of Birmingham who explored the mechanism whereby a contractionary monetary policy shock triggers a decline in durable and non-durable outputs as well as a contraction in bank equity and a rise in excess bond premium. Other speakers discussed pay reform, exchange rate predictability, new trade costs due to Brexit, transport infrastructure projects and the perceptions of globalisation and its impact on trade.
During 2022, GEPG members have published their work in top international journals including the Journal of International Money and Finance, Economics Letters, Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, and the Bulletin of Economic Research.
“The Global Economic Policy Group is an international joint venture offering a platform for cooperation between researchers working in the area of international economics. Our June meeting was hosted by our German partner at their Central Berlin campus. The members of the group have already produced a significant number of internationally excellent research outputs this year and we are already looking forward to our next meeting in 2023,” said Dr Karen Jackson, Reader in Economics, Director of International Development and Assistant Head of School.
