Roberta Shavenko, third year student on the Illustration and Visual Communication BA Honours course, has designed the front cover for the University’s student life magazine ‘Hello Westminster’.
Hello Westminster is the University of Westminster’s student life magazine, which gives offer holders an overview of what to expect when becoming part of the University’s community, tips on things to do and ways to get involved in life at Westminster.
Roberta heard about the opportunity via her course leader, and applied straight away by sharing her digital portfolio with the magazine team. Roberta was selected to create this year’s front cover due to her unique design, and the colourful, vibrant and positive energy her work depicts.
When sketching the illustration, Roberta aimed to convey what it means to be a student in London and all of the positive rewards that come with it. She created a diverse range of characters in the design to ensure that everyone reading the magazine could see themselves in at least one of the characters on the cover.
The opportunity to design the front cover of the Hello Westminster magazine allowed Roberta to gain global exposure for her work, increase her opportunity for commissions and build her employability prospects.
Talking about being selected to create the design, Roberta said: “I was thrilled and incredulous when I found out that I had been selected to design the cover of the 2022 edition of the Hello Westminster magazine. It was an extraordinary opportunity for me both because it brought me great exposure and especially because it opened the doors for new experiences in the field of illustration in which I would like to grow more in the future. Knowing that the University was happy and satisfied with the outcome filled me with joy, and I think it’s the greatest feeling.”
