On 22 February Westminster welcomed Georgina Lawton to a Blackness and Belonging event as part of Black History Year. During the evening students got the chance to learn from her experiences and ask questions around writing about race and other important topics.

Lawton is a journalist, travel writer and author of Black Girls Take World, a travel guide for Black women, and Raceless, a non-fiction book described as “freshly fascinating” by the New York Times.

Lawton works as a Guardian Weekend columnist and is a regular freelance contributor for the paper. She also writes for a number of other publications such as The Independent, i newspaper, Evening Standard, Stylist, gal-dem, Travel + Leisure, VICE and Time Out London. Along with her print work she is also a broadcaster and host of the award-winning Audible podcast The Secrets In Us.

The event aimed to foster open dialogue, promote inclusivity and inspire attendees to reflect on their own journeys of self-discovery and acceptance. Whether they are seeking a greater understanding of Black identity or exploring ways to create more inclusive spaces, Blackness and Belonging was a rich and insightful evening.

This event contributed toward the Reduced Inequalities (10) and Gender Equality (5) development goals of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which were adopted by the University of Westminster to help make the University a more sustainable, responsible and inclusive place to live, work and study.

About the event Zahrah Surooprajally, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Event Manager and Programme Co-ordinator, said: “I found it so inspiring to listen to how Georgina has managed to create these communities for creatives of colour. A really great conversation with so much food for thought and reminders to get connecting and get creating.”
