Dr Robin Law, Senior Lecturer in Psychology and part of the Psychophysiology and Stress Research Group at the University of Westminster, was quoted in an article by Mail Online about how to stop stress from tipping you over the edge.

In the article, Dr Law spoke about the body’s stress-response system, and how the brain sends signals to the adrenal glands to secrete more cortisol into the bloodstream. He said: “It permeates cells all over the body, promoting functions that help us escape from or overcome the perceived threat.”

However, he highlighted that most modern world stresses are chronic stressors that do not go away such as money, work or family problems. He added: “As a result, a person maintains this stress response for a longer period of time. And it’s this sustained exposure to cortisol that has very negative effects on your physical and psychological health.”
