Dr Monica Germanà, Senior Lecturer in English Literature and Creative Writing, was featured in an article published by The Guardian Online about the gender politics of James Bond theme songs.
Billie Eilish will be the youngest ever artist to soundtrack a James Bond film, having been chosen to record the theme for the upcoming film ‘No Time to Die’.
In her book ‘Bond Girls: Body, Fashion and Gender’ Dr Germanà argues that while the older Bond films “present some problematic gender politics”, the female voices “frequently expose issues we are now more openly challenging.”
Appointing Eilish to perform the new soundtrack is a further step towards updating the franchise and tackling outdated gender discrepancies, suggests Dr Germanà, as she says: “her uncompromising femininity embodies the perfect answer to any lingering doubts about the franchise’s awareness that gender politics must be addressed.”
