Dr Luis Delgado, Senior Research Fellow in Air Transport, was quoted in an article by Politico about short-haul flights and whether banning them is an effective measure on tackling emissions.
In the article, Dr Delgado spoke about France’s aim to ban short-haul flights that can be replaced by a train trip of less than 2.5 hours. He said: “These are a very limited number of flights with almost no impact – in the big picture on emissions, so they are more a PR action than a significant benefit for the environment.”
He added that the same will be true in most countries, explaining that: “the number of flights within national borders which can be substituted is very low.”
He also explained that measures would have to be cross-border in order to have any kind of impact.
