Dr Enrica Papa, Reader in Transport Planning, was interviewed by NTV about the Crossrail project in London.
The Crossrail is a railway construction project which will run a high-frequency suburban service from west to east London.
Talking about the importance of the Crossrail for residents of the city and suburbs, Dr Papa said: “The project is essential to increase the capacity of east-west connection. London’s population is continuing to grow, and the London underground system is congested, especially the east-west connections, including the Central line, and several policies have been put in practice to reduce the pressure of commuter demand on the network, like improving cycling and walking infrastructures. The railway tube system, at pre-pandemic level, is in any case close to the collapse.”
She later added: “The construction is going on for more than two decades. Constructions started in May 2009. The first of the new trains entered service between Liverpool Street and Shenfield in June 2017. In May 2018, TfL started running services from Paddington to Heathrow, which will form part of the western end of the final Crossrail service. The central section, mostly tunnel, of the line is still not open.”
