Computer Science and Engineering students gain vital career insight at What Comes Next? event

Westminster School of Computer Science and Engineering has hosted a student careers event as part of the University’s What Comes Next? (WCN) series. The event featured an alumni panel discussion and Q&A session where students gained knowledge and insight from recent graduates who shared their career journeys.

The event took place during Student Engagement Week on 30 October at the University’s Cavendish Campus. All students from the School of Computer Science and Engineering were invited, and the alumni panel reflected the wide range of courses offered within the school, including Computer Games Development BSc Honours, Data Science and Analytics BSc Honours, Business Information Systems BSc Honours and Computer Software Engineering BEng Honours.

The diverse panel of graduates shared insights into the varied career options available after graduation and discussed a range of useful topics before holding a Q&A session where students could ask their own questions. Attendees then participated in a social networking session where students could speak directly with the alumni guests.

The WCN programme was introduced as a course-aligned event series in 2021 aimed at sharing the knowledge of recent graduates with current students by inviting them back to speak at the University. WCN events provide students with the opportunity to learn about the career options available to them after graduation and network with alumni in a relaxed, familiar environment.

About the event, Computer Science BSc Honours student Muskan commented: “It was really helpful. There was lots of info about the industry and it definitely boosted my confidence to grow further.”

David Brooks, Alumni Relations Officer at the University, added: “It was fantastic to welcome back alumni from courses across the School of Computer Science and Engineering. They shared their own experiences and offered lots of useful advice to help our students with their own career journeys. A huge thank you to our graduate panel for coming back to support our students.”

Westminster’s WCN programme contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4: Quality Education and 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
