College of Liberal Arts and Science students celebrated at memorable 2024 Excellence Awards

Every year, the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences organises the Excellence Awards to celebrate undergraduate students’ achievements and recognise their hard work. The awards go to the top Level Three, Four and Level Five students and are determined by student results in the previous academic year. These awards are also an opportunity to celebrate students with support and recognition from family, friends and colleagues. 

This year, over 120 students were selected from across all four schools within the College: the School of Life Sciences, the School of Humanities, the School of Social Sciences and the Westminster Law School. Each student was presented with an achievement certificate and glass trophy by Dr Sal Jarvis, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Education and Dr Thomas Moore, Interim Head of College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. 

The award ceremony included performances by students from the School of Arts: Rotem Aberbach, a student on the Music: Production, Performance and Enterprise BA Honours course, now Music Production, Performance and Business BA Honours; and Joel Marquis-Kumba, also a student on the  Music Production, Performance and Business BA Honours course.  

After the ceremony, students and their guests were welcomed to a reception in Portland Hall where they could enjoy a DJ set by Professor Luke Mason, Head of the Westminster Law School, as well as mocktail drinks in a bar run by students from the Democratic Education Network.  

Dr Moore said: “Our Excellence Awards are a celebration of the excellence which underpins everything we do here at Westminster. We celebrate the excellence we’ve made in building an inclusive community of changemakers, as well as the excellence we’ve made in building a dynamic community of learners, ready to confront future challenges in a range of industries and settings.” 

Joshua Rowe, an awarded student on the Healthcare Science Practitioner Apprenticeship - Applied Biomedical Science BSc Honours course, said: “There was so much passion and sincerity from the speakers at the event - I felt a genuine sense of pride and belonging. In particular, I loved how everyone explained that excellence can look like many different things. There were lots of other people who made the event feel special and well-organised: the musicians, UWSU stewards, front desk greeters, photographer, caterers, course leaders and no doubt more people behind the scenes. The whole experience was flawless and enjoyable. My fancy glass cuboid will sit proudly as a reminder of this occasion - a fond, stand-out memory from my time at Westminster.” 

This award initiative directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 3: Good Health and Wellbeing and 4: Quality Education. Since 2019, the University of Westminster has used the SDGs holistically to frame strategic decisions to help students and colleagues fulfil their potential and contribute to a more sustainable, equitable and healthier society.
