Christian Fuchs for The Wall Street Journal on how tech giants have hijacked the internet

Professor Christian Fuchs, Director of the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI), was interviewed by The Wall Street Journal about combatting online monopolies.

The article investigates the ways in which some innovators are developing new platforms on the internet to prevent monopolies in the future.

In the article, Professor Fuchs said that capitalising on the oceans of data produced by the web had not made the internet a more open place, and added: “The internet is a corporate monopoly today, and monopolies are always a danger to democracy.”

He added: “We need a web of the people, not a web of the corporations, there’s now more public awareness, and that’s the foundation of changing things.”
