The scholarships are open to exceptional students from a British Muslim background looking to progress onto postgraduate study, and at Westminster they are open to British Muslims with career aspirations in Media & Journalism, Policy and Law.

Having completed her undergraduate course in Law at the University of York and as a result of her Aziz Foundation Scholarship, Tanzilla Azad is now able to study for her Legal Practice LLM at Westminster in order to qualify as a solicitor.

Speaking about how the scholarship will aid her in her postgraduate studies, she said: “After speaking to former LPC students about how they balanced a work-uni life, they explained that it was impossible due to the course’s intensity. It was daunting to think that either my finances or quality of academic work would suffer.

“After applying for the Aziz Foundation Scholarship, I’m able to pour all my efforts into focusing on my degree. I was delighted to hear that I not only received a scholarship, but that the Foundation’s purpose was to help people like me access Higher Education and increase representation in professional jobs.”

Simay Sali Sevik, Development Manager at Westminster, added: “Scholarships like those of the Aziz Foundation play a vital role in providing equality and supporting underrepresented communities. As such, we are delighted to be the Aziz Foundation’s partner university and award our first-ever Aziz scholar, Tanzilla. We are confident that with enthusiasm and our commitment to widening participation, we can close the BME awarding gap at the postgraduate level.”

The Aziz Foundation was set up as a family foundation in 2015 by the Aziz family and its guiding philosophy and key principle of operation is to support British Muslims to bring positive change to their communities and beyond.

The partnership between Westminster and the Aziz Foundation began in 2021 and was founded on a number of shared values from promoting Widening Participation at the postgraduate level to removing barriers to access and success for BME students.
