This year, the University of Westminster students have the chance to apply for 15 funded United Nations (UN) internships across Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, giving them the opportunity to work with UN agencies and gain high-level professional experience.
The internships, which are exclusive to the University of Westminster students, are part of the University’s internship programme with the United Nations Migration Agency, also known as the International Organization for Migration (IOM). These internships, located in headquarter, regional and field offices of IOM across the globe, provide students the opportunity to gain hands on experience and learn from industry professionals.
In their roles, the interns can engage in a wide range of global issues relating to migration and development, migration policy, migrant protection, migration health and disaster preparedness and response. This year’s available internship roles include Protection Division Intern in Vienna, Austria, Migration Health Division Intern in Geneva, Switzerland and Recovery and Resilience Intern in Nairobi, Kenya. The internships range from six to nine months and will provide students with excellent opportunities to excel in their professional careers, develop significant skills and competencies, gain exposure to the workings of a leading international organisation and build a firm foundation for their future careers.
Alexandra Bukhareva, who completed the International Relations and Development BA Honours course in July 2023 and is completing a nine-month internship at IOM’s Kenya office, working within the Somalia Programme Support Unit, said: “What I enjoy the most is the diversity of my work as coordinating the projects means being partially involved in the work of every unit separately, which allows you to understand the working principles of IOM to a full extent. From the start, my supervisor told me that IOM treats interns as staff members which is something that truly motivated me.”
IOM is the leading global organisation promoting humane and orderly migration for the benefit of all since 1951. It has its headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, and has more than 100 regional and country offices around the world.
These UN-IOM internships are open to all University of Westminster students, except those in their first year of undergraduate studies. The application deadline is the end of the day on 31 January with internships starting around May 2024.
