Former Illustration and Visual Communication BA Honours student Natalia Stoyanova has been selected for the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize for her contemporary drawing.
The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize is known as the UK’s most important annual open exhibition of drawing, with 101 drawings by 89 creatives out of 3,300 entries from 1,673 artists being selected for the 2021 exhibition.
The exhibition promotes and celebrates excellence in contemporary drawing practice, making the Prize an important platform for artists and makers across the world.
Natalia’s piece was heavily inspired by her five-year-old son during the pandemic and the struggles he faced with the lack of social contact. He would often imagine his friends were beside him, and pretend that he was talking and playing with them.
Concerning the inspiration for her art, Natalia said: “The situation we were all experiencing with the start of the pandemic made us all go through different stages and affected our emotional states. Especially during the lockdowns when we weren`t able to see our friends and families.”
She also added: “I am very delighted [for the nomination], and can’t still quite believe, to have my drawing selected for the final exhibition as TBWDP is one of the most important drawing events in the UK.”
The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize 2021 exhibition will launch with the Awards Announcement on 29 September 2021.
