Between 22-25 March, Fashion, Contemporary Media Practice and Film students at the University of Westminster took on a challenge set by Josie Ho, a renowned Hong Kong actress and singer, and got the chance to win a range of prizes.
The students were set to the task of designing digital content in the forms of metaverse rooms, design games, UX designs and interactive marketing materials for Josie Ho and her metaverse. They were challenged to create a fully workable prototype that could be further developed into a functioning product.
With their ideas brought to fruition, each group had to pitch to Josie and her STUDIOQASE team and explain the in-depth research and planning that had gone into their project. Each group were judged on their creativity, storytelling and the team’s out of the box thinking. The judges were looking for a group who used technology in a clever, creative and interesting way to create innovative and exciting content that resonates best to The World of Josie Ho.
With such a high standard of projects, all groups were awarded a range of cash prizes, with the top group also winning the chance to work with Josie on a metaverse project this summer.
About the event, third-year Contemporary Media Practice BA Honours student Umme Hani said: “Participating in the Hackathon titled Josie Ho and the Metaverse was amazing. The collaborative atmosphere and amazing mentors helped make the three tiring days energetic. Despite hurdles, we showcased creativity and resilience, delivering projects within the deadline.
“The experience enhanced my problem-solving skills and taught me to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. I also got the opportunity to network with Josie's team and understand how to work with client briefs to bring together technology and creativity in a unique way. Overall, the Hackathon was a transformative journey that shaped my perspective of what collaboration could be alongside developing skills outside of the classroom.”
Josie Ho said: “It was fantastic to see so many brilliant innovations and ideas from the students at the University of Westminster. I believe collaboration is the cornerstone of innovation, so it has been a pleasure witnessing the creations that have emerged from this project – everyone is so talented. I can’t wait to see what else the students produce as they continue working together.”
Simay Sali Sevik, Development Manager at the University of Westminster, added: “Thanks to Josie Ho, students were able to explore new ideas, develop innovative solutions and collaborate in ways that exceeded our expectations. We are proud to have had Josie as a partner in this endeavour and are hopeful that this marks the beginning of a long-lasting relationship.”
