About the event
Last year, we hosted our first accessibility symposium, bringing together staff, students and external guests to discuss key topics including AI progression, procurement, and skills development. This year, focus is on designing practical outputs to enhance accessibility. The 2024 symposium themes are: (Panel 1) Connecting physical and digital accessibility, and (Panel 2) Impacts of the European Accessibility Act on UK higher education.
This year's event will have two panels and two workshops:
Panel 1 – Connecting Physical and Digital Accessibility
Physical and digital accessibility are often siloed, but in universities, they are closely linked and should be showcased. To enhance experiences for colleagues and students, we must prioritise the intersection of physical and digital accessibility. Discussions will explore digital tools for navigation and the integration of digital interfaces in physical spaces. This session aims to foster collaboration between these areas, helping universities develop holistic accessibility strategies. It will feature projects like Westminster’s library sensory maps and discuss practical steps for improving collaboration.
Panel 2 – The European Accessibility Act
Despite its name, the European Accessibility Act (EAA) is highly relevant to post-Brexit Britain, especially for internationally focused higher education institutions. The impact of the EAA is still uncertain, but with its focus on eBooks and services and services to the EU, there are pressing questions about preparing for its likely effects from June 2025 and how it aligns with UK accessibility regulations. The panel discussion will lead into group activity to craft practical guidance for universities preparing for the EAA amidst uncertainty.
