About the event
Curated by Dr Monica Germanà, this event features a private viewing of an exhibition of local and international artists whose practices engage with the urgent environmental questions raised by the current climate crisis. In particular, by focussing on the melting icecaps and rising water levels, it considers the vanishing landmark that is the Arctic, and the repercussions that a potentially ice-free Arctic might have for the rest of the world in the near future. Among others, the works on display will feature multi-media artist David Cass’s ‘Where Once the Waters’, an installation made of letters addressed to project participants to remind audiences of the local impact of such global environmental threats. The private viewing will be accompanied by a talk by fibre artist Jen Cable, who will be in conversation with Monica Germanà about the inspiration behind her two pieces on display (‘Going, Going, Gone’ and ‘Floods’), and the environmental questions that, more widely, preoccupy her practice.
This event is part of Being Human Festival, the UK’s national festival of the humanities, taking place 7–16 November 2024. Led by the School of Advanced Study, University of London, with generous support from Research England, the festival is being held in partnership with the Arts and Humanities Research Council and the British Academy.
