We invite you to join us for an Urban Climate Walking tour through the City of London led by Dr. Julie Futcher.

A tall building

As part of on-going research into understanding the relationship between built form, energy and climate and the role of critical urban infrastructure we invite you to join us for a Special Interest Group Urban Climate Walking tour through the City of London led by Dr. Julie Futcher.

During the walk Julie will report her latest research findings, alongside discussing the role of built form in addressing the challenges of the climate and environmental emergencies and the net-zero carbon targets.

The City of London Urban Climate Walk presents a unique view of the City through the role of urban form in creating distinct urban microclimates and offers a novel perspective on London’s dramatic and changing skyline. The theme that links the various stops along the way is energy, both in its natural expression (temperature, wind and sunshine) and those of building needs (cooling and heating loads) and how these are interdependently linked at the scale of the city street.

Throughout the walk we experience the direct and dynamic influence of built form on the background climate, demonstrating the far-reaching effects of increasing urban density on passive resources i.e. daylight and ventilation, and in turn the influence of these effects on thermal comfort, health and wellbeing – key components of healthy climate resilient cities.

The walk promotes conversation around the direct links between architecture, planning, climate, and infrastructure, whilst clarifying the spatial and temporal characteristics of the various urban climate effects, including the different types of urban heat islands, often misrepresented in much non-urban climate literature.

This walking tour is aimed at members of the Sustainable Cities and the Urban Environment (SCUE) Research Community (both academic staff and PhD students) and there are a limited number of places (20). The walk provides a chance for us to meet in person and we would also like members to join so we can explore the possibility of SCUE creating a similar tour between the University Westminster’s central London campuses.
