A unique opportunity to reflect on the fundamental role of Advocates General in shaping EU law.
Event summary
Advocates General, as members of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), play a fundamental role. Their task is to deliver opinions on the intricacies of the pending cases and to indicate the recommended direction of travel to the judges, who in turn deliver judgments.
Whether or not their opinions are followed by the court, the Advocates General have demonstrated great ability to shape EU law. With Brexit, the Court of Justice has lost the benefit of having UK Advocates General who, for almost five decades, contributed to the European Union's judicial discourse at large.
This conference, organised by Westminster Law School, brings together Advocates General, past and present, offering a unique opportunity to reflect on their role and the significant contributions of four UK Advocates General:
- Jean-Pierre Warner
- Sir Gordon Slynn
- Sir Francis Jacobs
- Eleanor Sharpston
The event coincides with the publication of Shaping EU Law the British Way: UK Advocates General at the Court of Justice of the European Union.
