"This Too Shall Pass" is the culmination of a five-year doctoral research project on the photography of post-communist ruins in Hungary.
Reka Komoli's innovative and complex photographic project drills into the collective memory of Hungary. She travelled through the economically damaged towns of the industrial heartland, recording the architectural and societal palimpsest of the Soviet occupation. Excavating the historical contents of the disintegrating buildings, she has uncovered a constellation of human experience.
Reka has assembled a photographic exhibition that challenges simplistic readings of post-communist ruin photography. Delving into home, work and holiday life under four decades of Soviet domination, she traces the connections between the ruins that are still standing but rapidly disappearing, and the complex and sometimes contradictory life of 'Homo sovieticus'.
