The BHY Beyond Books initiative, launched in April 2023, provides a space for staff, students, and the public to critically review representations of Blackness in the media using discussions and performative dialogue. Our first event in the series reviewed Michaela Coel’s "I May Destroy You."
As part of the Black History Year programme, the goal is to encourage open conversations on Black identity representation in arts and culture and to give people the opportunity to delve deeper into Black history and explore the nuances of contemporary Black culture through literature.
This time, we're hosting a captivating movie night featuring the acclaimed film "The Intouchables."
Directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano, "The Intouchables" is a poignant tale that transcends barriers of race, class, and disability. Set in Paris, the film follows the unlikely friendship between Philippe, a wealthy quadriplegic, and Driss, a charismatic ex-convict hired as his caregiver. Together, they embark on a transformative journey filled with humor, compassion, and profound lessons on empathy.
After the screening, we invite you to engage in a thought-provoking discussion. Explore the themes of representation, inclusion, and the power of human connection as we reflect on the film's impact and relevance to our lives today.
Whether you're a film enthusiast, a social advocate, or simply curious to expand your horizons, this event promises to be an enriching experience for all. Don't miss this opportunity to spend an evening celebrating inclusivity and insightful discussions.
