Who are we?
Smoke Radio is run entirely by and for students. We broadcast a variety of shows 24 hours a day, and can be heard online, via the website and various apps.
We produce shows from our studio in Harrow Campus and also from satellite studios at Cavendish Campus, as well as hosting pre-recorded podcasts on the website.
We’re always looking for new volunteers and any current Westminster student can join us.
Reasons to get involved
Find your student voice
Student radio is a way to amplify the opinions, views and concerns of students and allow them to reach a wider audience. It's one more way you can campaign for change in society, within and beyond the campus.
You’ll also be part of shaping the conversation. Smoke Radio holds power to account by reporting on the activities of the Students' Union elected officers, not only during election time but throughout the year.
Grow yourself
The soft skills you’ll gain (teamwork, project management and prioritisation) and the contacts you make won't just serve you well in radio and audio, they'll serve you well in life.
Student radio is a great way to get a feel for how multimedia production operates in today’s creative world.
You’ll also get involved with a range of major events, for instance National Student Pride (NSP). We’re the official media partners of NSP, held annually at the Marylebone Campus. This is a great opportunity to work in a professional environment, gathering audio/visual material from celebrities and high-profile guests for cross-platform broadcast.
Develop new skills
Being involved in student radio is a great way to boost your employability. We use industry-standard equipment, facilities and software. You’ll learn technical skills – like how to operate radio studio equipment, record and edit audio and video – along with transferable skills like writing, podcasting, social media production, event organising and teamwork.
This will equip you with the tools needed for a career in the creative industries. You’ll also be able to build a portfolio from the work you produce.
Whether you're a complete newcomer or a seasoned creative looking for a new outlet for your passion, we hope we'll be able to teach you something new.
Future careers
Our alumni have made names for themselves across all industry areas – from the BBC to commercial radio, from digital media production companies to music promotion. Employers value the soft skills gained through student media experience.
Our awards
Smoke Radio has won a staggering 29 awards at the national Student Radio Awards, in categories ranging from Best Entertainment Event to Best Specialist Music show, and Best Interview.
We have been crowned with the Gold award for Best Student Station in the UK twice in the last five years. As part of our prize for Best Station in 2019, we were given the opportunity to take over three early breakfast shows on BBC Radio One, producing and presenting over five hours of radio for a UK and global audience.
How to get involved
There are various ways to get involved and you don’t need any special skills or experience. As long as you’re enthusiastic about any aspect of digital content, from music radio to podcasts, from video to blogging, we’d love to hear from you.
If you’d like to get involved there’s no audition or interview needed. In the first instance, get in touch with the station manager at [email protected] and tell us what kind of area you’d like to work in and if you have any particular ideas for a show or podcast.
