Course summary
Operational Coaching® Part 1 - STAR® Coach Practitioner is an exciting new programme scientifically proven to help you adopt an Operational Coaching® style of management and bring coaching into the flow of your everyday work.
It addresses the urgent need for a more modern approach to management and leadership. Adopting the STAR® model will show you how to depressurise and instead learn to engage others respectfully and authentically.
Described as the “missing superpower”, Operational Coaching® was subjected to extensive government-backed research conducted by the London School of Economics and was proven to increase team engagement, productivity, inclusivity and collaboration levels. It offers a vital and modern approach to increasing your impact and influence as a proactive engager of people to help support effective and sustainable change.
The course will:
- explore the difference between traditional forms of coaching and mentoring vs. adopting an Operational Coaching® approach
- take you step-by-step through the STAR® model, including exercises designed to get you practising quickly
- allow you to benefit from helpful coaching from colleagues
- help you reflect on those areas where adapting your style will pay swift dividends
- help you develop a coaching mindset
Instead of an exam, you’ll attend a small group practitioner session at the end of the course and submit some short reflective exercises conducted in your workplace, leading to the award of APMG’s STAR® Coach Practitioner certificate.
Who is this course for?
Operational Coaching® Part 1 - STAR® Coach Practitioner is suitable for any leader, senior executive, project or line manager, or anyone aspiring to become any of those.
It is intended to help you develop a more engaging Operational Coaching® style of management that can be used throughout your work day (and beyond), that pulls people towards you and invites them to contribute their talents to solving the day-to-day issues at hand. Learning to engage others helps you win time back as you’re relieved of some of the pressure of having to step into every problem brought to you.

Course structure
The course is a non-residential programme that runs for six weeks. It begins with a small amount of pre-work before attending a one-day workshop built around the core STAR® model, which underpins the Operational Coaching® approach. The workshop is interactive, and participants will work with other delegates on exercises designed to encourage confidence in applying the STAR® model in day-to-day conversations to help engage others.
After the workshop, you’ll conduct several short workplace missions (conversations with team members/colleagues) over several weeks and answer reflective questions on each (to be submitted).
The programme concludes with a virtual, small-group practitioner session of 90 minutes to reflect on what’s been learned, practise some more, and gain verbal and written feedback from your tutor.
The course will cover:
- the context for Operational Coaching and how to bring coaching-related behaviours into your everyday management style
- understanding the Four Domains of Leadership
- why asking questions delivers better longer-term results than telling or advising
- how others learn (learning theories)
- how to give great feedback
- how to stop: build triggers to prevent you from stepping in to every problem
- how to think: is this a coachable moment?
- how to ask more insightful and powerful questions that stimulate thinking
- how to secure a result, a commitment from others to follow through

Teaching and assessment
The course is a practical programme to develop skills and confidence as you adopt new behaviours in your interactions with others. Consequently, this is an interactive programme where you will coach other delegates and receive coaching.
The pre-work prepares you for some exercises conducted during the one-day workshop, and active discussion of the insights generated form an essential part of the learning. Supported by a detailed workbook, which will become an essential reference, and a pack of supporting materials, including the course book The Answer is a Question, a final Practitioner session brings the course to a close with final written and verbal feedback given to each participant.
Submission of reflective learning logs from the workplace missions (the evidence portfolio) and attendance at the Practitioner session are the requirements for the award of the STAR® Coach Practitioner certificate.
Your career
The rate at which you develop your communication and engagement skills will likely be the most significant determinant of your career trajectory. Gaining the confidence to draw from others respectfully whilst helping them grow benefits you and them. Becoming the manager that others aspire to work with is the greatest testament to your developing skills and differentiating yourself as an effective manager while depressurising will allow you to be a more reflective and present leader, opening the way for internal advancement.
Developing the Operational Coaching® skills you’ll learn from pursuing the STAR® Coach Practitioner programme is a critical skill set in its own right. As an adjunct to other courses, including project management, Agile and change management, STAR® provides the catalyst for change.
