About me
I studied architecture at the Polytechnic of Central London to BA and Diploma levels. In my final year I was taught design by David Greene and architectural history by Robin Evans. I was nominated that year for the RIBA dissertation prize. I then studied for an M.Sc in Advanced Architectural Studies at UCL where I obtained a distinction.
Architecture practices I once worked for include Lunquist and Stonehill and Wayne Berg Architects in New York, and Alsop and Lyall and Peter Barber Architects in London.
Prior to moving to the University of Westminster, I worked at Oxford Brookes University, where I was Course Leader for the Diploma in Architecture and MA in Architecture and Cultural Studies among other things. Before that I taught design at UCL.
I joined westminster as a Principal Lecturer in 2007. Since then I have taught at various levels within the department of Architecture from Ph.D by design students to first year history and theory courses. Currently I run the cultural context dissertation module for UG third year students and a design studio and dissertation group for M.Arch students.
I am a member of the Academic Council for the University of Westminster.
I have given lectures and run workshops internationally in many parts of Europe and Asia.
Teaching
I am currently module leader for CC3: Dissertation.
I run the DS12 design studio in the M.Arch course.
I also run an M.Arch dissertation tutorial group focused on Architecture and Rurality.
I have been on various Westminster course validation panels (looking at courses in law, fine arts and primary health care).
I have been a member of the RIBA schools validation panel.
I have been an external examiner or advisor for the Manchester School of Architecture and Greenwich University School of Architecture.
Research
My research output is multidisciplinary. It combines writing, design, architecture, photography, drawing and other media. I have written about tourism and politics and architecture in the past.
Some years ago I was asked to help design the Oxford City Farm and become one of its trustees. Since then much of my attention has turned to architecture's relationships with the rural.
In 2015 I initiated and helped organise the Re-Imagining Rurality conference held at the University of Westminster. Publications related to this include the book Rurality Re-Imagined, the 'Villages and Globalisation' issue of Architecture and Culture Journal and ‘The Politics of Landscape' issue ofLandscape Research Journal.
This year I began co-editing a book called Re-Scaling the Rural with colleagues from Aarhus School of Architecture and UCD. This will be published in spring 2025.
A chapter written by me called 'Four Cottage Scenes: Reading Across Globalised Idylls' will be in the forthcoming Rural Imaginations book to be published by Brill in 2025.
I have been a scientific committe member for a number of conferences including Rescaling the Rural held in Thy, Denmark in 2022 and The Animal Gaze held at London Metropolitan Univesity in 2020.
I am a member of ARENA (European Architecture Research Network), the AlterRurality network and the New European Bauhaus Collective.
